Winter 2009 Anime — Of Sequels and Sci-fi

The year 2009 promises another phase of wonderful anime, most of them continuation of series released the previous year. Here is the lineup for this season. I’m a bit late but ignore that XD;. These are arranged alphabetically, with the usual info like date, seiyuu cast and a short summary. I did not include pictures, but you can find links to each series’ official site.

Again, my watching verdicts are: YES, NO, and MAYBE.

start: January 03, 2009
website: http://www.melomelomelon.com/
introduction: A boy named Kakeru Daichi drinks from a soda can that suddenly turned into a cute girl named Melon Soda who called him master.
seiyuu spotlight: Fukuyama Jun, Narita Sayaka, Okiayu Ryoutarou
verdict: MAYBE. This might turn out to be another ecchi/harem anime, something I really avoid. The art looks okay, though.

start: January 08, 2009
website: http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/yoichi/
introduction: A country swordsman goes into the city and met four girls. Fanservice and comedy ensued.
seiyuu spotlight: Okamoto Nobuhiko, Satou Rina, Konishi Katsuyuki
verdict: NO. Fanservice >_>.

sequel to: Birdy the Mighty DECODE
start: January 09, 2009
website: http://www.birdy-tv.com/
introduction: This is a continuation of the sci-fi series about Birdy, a cyborg police that accidentally killed a boy and ended up sharing her body with him while his body was under rehabilitation.
seiyuu spotlight: Saeko Chiba, Fujiwara Keiji, Shiraishi Ryoko
verdict: NO. I wasn’t able to watch the first one, so I’ll just save this one for future viewing.

start: January 10, 2009
website: http://anime.webnt.jp/regios/
introduction: Lefon is a boy who enters a martial-arts school in order to protect the people in his own.
seiyuu spotlight: Okamoto Nobuhiko, Sakaguchi Daisuke, Taniyama Kishou, Koyasu Takehito
verdict: MAYBE. The preview pictures make me think that this is a harem anime, however the seiyuu list says otherwise. So, I need to check the first episode to see if I will seriously watch it.

DRUAGA NO TO ~the Sword of URUK~
sequel to: Druaga no to ~Aegis of URUK~
start: January 08, 2009
website: http://www.druaga-anime.com/
introduction: More of the RPG-inspired anime and more crack as the characters aim for the top of the tower.
seiyuu spotlight: KENN, Orikasa Fumiko, Sakurai Takahiro
verdict: YES. This is such a fun anime and I wouldn’t want to miss it for the world, Kenn being the primary reason.

sequel to: Hajime no Ippo season 2
start: January 06, 2009
website: http://www.ntv.co.jp/ippo/
introduction: The long-running boxing series gets a sequel!
seiyuu spotlight: Kiyasu Kouhei, Koyama Rikiya, Seki Tomokazu
verdict: NO. I’m never fond of boxing so I’m skipping this one, even though I’m awed that a sequel has been made to the already long series. EPIC!

start: January 24, 2009

seiyuu spotlight: Namikawa Daisuke, Takahashi Hiroki, Konishi Katsuyuki, Sasanuma Akira, Paku Romi, Kaida Yuki, Kugimiya Rie
verdict: YES! I’ve been waiting so long for this anime. And based on the trailer and the powerhouse voice cast, I don’t think I’ll be disappointed.

start: January 10, 2009
website: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/anime/erin/
introduction: Erin is a beast player, someone who controls beasts using her harp.
seiyuu spotlight: Hoshii Nanase, Hirata Eriko, Tani Ikuko
verdict: MAYBE. The premise looks exciting and reminds me of Natsume Yuujinchou, but I have to see what kind of beasts are in this series (for srs, I have to).

KUROKAMI The Animation

website: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/anime/major/5th/
introduction: Another season adding to the long-running baseball series.
seiyuu spotlight: Morikubo Shoutarou, Morita Masakazu, Namikawa Daisuke
verdict: NO. Unfortunately, the only baseball anime I watched was Oofuri.

start: January 04, 2009
website: http://www.mariaholic.com/
introduction: Kanako has phobia with men, so she hopes to find a female partner as she enrolls in an all-girls school. When she thought that she had met the girl of her dreams in the form of a classmate, Mariya, she discovers that Mariya is, after all, a cross-dressing boy.
seiyuu spotlight: Kobayashi Yu, Sanada Asami, Inoue Marina
verdict: MAYBE. While this has yuri tones, I like the idea of a cross-dressing sadistic boy, LOL. I’m curious as to how the series will unfold so maybe I’ll watch the first episode and judge it from there.

sequel to: Maria-sama ga Miteiru season 3
start: January 03, 2009
website: http://www.gokigenyou.com/
introduction: A continuation of stories evolving around the life of high school girls in Lillian School for Girls.
seiyuu spotlight: Itou Miki, Ueda Kana, Shinohara Emi, Itou Shizuka
verdict: NO. I’m not a fan of this type of series, especially when there are hints of shoujo-ai ^^;.

start: January 11, 2009
website: http://www.rideback-anime.jp/
introduction: The story revolves around Rin, a ballerina, and her “Iron Horse”, a robot motorcycle.

introduction: Hoshimura Makina continues her hunt mission for the other undead.
seiyuu spotlight: Akiyama Nana, Suwabe Junichi, Sugita Tomokazu, Hirata Yuuka
verdict: NO. Sadly, the previous season did not impress me at all. I find the plot similar to other series and a little dragging. I might give this a chance in the future, but for now it’s a no.

sequel: Slayers Revolution
start: January 12, 2009
website: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/slayers_revolution/er/
introduction: A sequel to Slayers Revolution but with a new storyline.
seiyuu spotlight: Hayashibara Megumi, Matsumoto Yasunori, Midorikawa Hikaru
verdict: NO. I need to finish the previous one first! D:

start: January 13, 2009

website: http://www.sorakake.net/
introduction: Overpopulation has become man’s problem, forcing him to move out of Earth and explore space.
seiyuu spotlight: Mako, Endou Aya, Makino Yui

introduction: An anime based on the “Tales of Genji” written by Murasaki Shikibu which shows court life during the Heian period.
seiyuu spotlight: Sakura Takahiro, Endou Aya, Horiuchi Kenyuu, Sugita Tomokazu

verdict: YES. Sci-fi adventure and Kaida Yuki are enough reasons for me to watch this.

start: January 03, 2009
website: http://www.whitealbum-tv.com/
introduction: A series adapted from an ero-game, White Album is centered around Fuji Touya, a college student dating an idol, Yuki, and the challenges they have to face.
verdict: NO. Even though it should be toned down, I don’t have any interest in it ^^;.

website: http://www.natsume-anime.jp/
introduction: More spirits to free and a new character appears.
seiyuu spotlight: Kamiya Hiroshi, Inoue Kazuhiko, Kobayashi Sanae, Ishida Akira
verdict: YES. I love the first one and I want more spirit-chasing, being-chased-by-spirits episodes :). I hope this’ll be as fun as the first one.

I guess that’s about it. My to-watch list is definitely shorter compared to the Summer and Fall of 2008, but not less amazing. I’m especially looking forward to Hetalia XD;. What series are you guys anticipating?
